As You Like It, March 27th through
to April 5th.
Main house production.
Directed by Chris Bealey, who gave us last season’s A
Midsummer Night’s Dream, Steampunk style, and set in the Summer of Love of
1967. Take a trip from the stifling court into the depths of
the forest where conventions – and costumes – are cast off, and the trees cloak
reality. As You Like It has all the elements of Shakespeare’s great comedies: cross-dressing,
unrequited love, an evil Duke taking the place of a banished one, brothers
locked in combat, and, of course, a philosophical Fool. The cast’s antics are
infused with music and song, rousing the Sixties’ spirit.
Next the Mad Red
Theatre School
take to the stage on April 7th, with their production of Hamlet. The Undiscover’d Country, directed by Rebecca Chapman. First produced as part
the Hostry Festival in October 2013, the Maddermarket’s education department,
Mad Red, perform an abridged version of Hamlet’s journey to that ‘undiscover’d
country from whose bourn no traveller returns’.
On 8th
April, the Norwich Players and friends will be entertaining us with a
Shakespearian variety show: Shakespeare’s Greatest Bits. An evening of the best
songs, sonnets and speeches from the world’s greatest wordsmith performed on
our world famous Elizabethan style stage. Delight in this exceptional anthology
of Shakespearean humour, music, love and hate performed by an ensemble of our
most talented performers.
Sing along to popular covers inspired by the Bard
such as Kiss Me Kate and West Side Story.
For those
who prefer the outdoors, on Sunday 12th April we premier our Sonnet
Walks: Strolling With Shakespeare. Enjoy a walk around historic Norwich and hear some of
Shakespeare's sonnets performed in the open air by members of the Norwich
Players. Each walk takes about an hour and ‘strollers’ depart every fifteen
minutes from the theatre.
So whether
you enjoy your Shakespeare stripped back and simple, with a modern twist, or
in unexpected places there will be something in the programme of events to
inspire you to join us in celebrating the birthday of the great man and all his
amazing legacy.
