SGT PEPPER - Linking Theatre History to the Modern Day

To celebrate the history of the theatre and our summer of love
themed production of
'As You Like It'
we have created a mock up of the iconic Beatles album cover from 1967.
We have included pictures of actors and directors from productions dating back to 1921 to several involved in the current Norwich Players production.
The naming of actors is a very recent feature at the theatre, so there are many that we do not know so please help us fill in the gaps......

1.      John Granger – John has played many roles at the theatre including Lear, twice! He will be interviewing John Hurt, one of his former pupils as part of the NNF.

2.      Emma Leith – Emma was briefly involved in the theatre in the 1980s, we don’t know where she is now, do you?

3.      Chris Bealey - Chris is currently directing our production of AYLI. He has acted and directed in many productions in Norwich including 17 of those penned by the Bard.

4.      John Dane – John, thinks this is a picture of him playing in Edward II but he’s not sure. He can be forgiven for not remembering as he is the most experienced actor and director of Shakespeare still working in Norwich. He is Jacques in our current production.

5.      Keith Bishop – We know little about Keith, please help us out with more information if you knew him.

6.      Tom Girvin – Tom’s profile is on the cast list page. He is playing Orlando in AYLI.

7.      Vera Goodenough – please tell us more about Vera.

8.      Ian Emmerson– Ian was artistic director of the theatre for many years and rivaled Nugent Monck in his production of Shakespeare at the theatre. Some players believe he also completed directing the full cannon, can you confirm this?

9.      Giles Connelly – Giles was in Chris’ production of The Midsummer Night’s Dream last year and will be in Humble Boy in April.

10. John (Rhys) Davis – Yes he started his career at the Maddermarket. He is now well known as Gimli from the Lord of the rings Trilogy and Sallah from the Indiana Jones movies.

11. The Queen Mother – pictured here on her visit to the theatre.

12. Jeannine Lockett – we’d like to know more about her.

13. Pam Williams - help us put a bit more information on here about Pam

14. Dawn Brindle - Dawn joined the Maddermarket Theatre by way of being in the wrong place at the right time in 1987 as a dresser for, appropriately enough, As You Like It. She has acted in and helped many productions since then and became a member of staff at the theatre in 2011.

15. Clare Higgins – please tell us more about Clare.

16. Rob Tiffin – Rob’s profile is on the cast list page. He is playing the Duke’s in our current production.

17. Etta Geras – Etta help us some information on here about yourself.

18. Tim Seely – Tim has been involved as actor and director in 15 productions of Shakespeare at the Maddermarket and is playing Corin in AYLI.

19. Dot Bins – Dot has worked in many productions since the 1980s, her first being with Chris. She is playing Martha, the re-assigned Adam in AYLI. This part is believed to have been played originally by Shakespeare himself.

20. Laura Landamore – Laura is a member of the trust. Her profile is on the cast list page and she is currently playing Rosalind in AYLI.

21. Walter Nugent Monck – founder of the Norwich Players. He was a very significant figure in the re-imagining of how Shakespeare can be produced. He is responsible for the first recreation of an Elizabethan stage, the theatre we still use today and was the first director to direct the entire Shakespeare cannon in modern times.  One of his protégé’s was instrumental in the development of the RSC. The Norwich Players have a national reputation for their work on Shakespeare and in its time the theatre has been patronized by WB Yeats, George Bernard Shaw and Gustav Holst.
